Design challenges for first grade?  Yes, you can do it.  Young children love to be read to and as teachers we want to promote that comprehension skill whenever possible.  Choose a great read-aloud and create a design project based on that.  Go beyond the "Three Little Pigs" and try to incorporate new stories as well.  

Title: Where the Wild Things Are

Objective: Using the materials provided, can you create a boat that will sail the farthest distance on three puffs of air?

Supplies (suggested): 

white paper, cardboard

Styrofoam bowls, aluminum foil

paper clips, straws

tape, scissors
